AI Overviews (AIO)
AI Overviews are the AI-generated answer boxes that appear at the top of Google Search, summarizing several sources in plain language before any blue links.
What it is
AI Overviews — sometimes still called AIO, or by its older code name SGE (Search Generative Experience) — is the box Google now shows at the top of many search results. Instead of just a list of links, Google reads several pages, writes a short summary, and cites the sources it used. The user often gets their answer without clicking anywhere.
AI Overviews don't appear for every query. Google decides per query whether one is helpful — they're more common for "how", "what", and "why" questions and less common for navigational searches. When they appear, they push the regular results below the fold, which makes being cited inside the overview much more valuable than being the #4 organic result.
Why it matters for your business
If a customer searches "how much does emergency drain cleaning cost" and Google's AI Overview answers them directly, the customer may never click your site. But if your page is cited inside the overview, your business name and link show up in front of every searcher with that question — high-intent users, multiple times a day. Optimizing for AI Overviews has become inseparable from optimizing for Google itself.
Example
A roofer's service page used to bury pricing factors under three paragraphs of marketing copy. They rewrote the page with a short, fact-dense section called "What changes the cost of roof repair?" using bullet points and concrete dollar ranges. Within two months, that section started getting quoted in AI Overviews for "roof repair cost [city]" queries — the company name appeared as a cited source in tens of thousands of searches a month.
