AI Mode (Google)

What it is

AI Mode is Google's full conversational search experience: instead of an AI Overview sitting on top of regular results, the entire interface becomes a chat where the user can ask follow-up questions, narrow scope, and compare options before being shown sources. It's Google's answer to using ChatGPT or Perplexity for research, but rooted in Google's index and ecosystem signals.

For the user, AI Mode looks more like a conversation than a search. For the underlying systems, it's still Google: the same crawlable web, the same trust signals, the same Google Business Profile data feeding into local recommendations. What changes is how much of the journey happens inside Google's chat surface before a click — which makes being clearly cited even more important than ranking #1.

Why it matters for your business

A customer in AI Mode might ask "I need a new water heater installed in Tampa, who do you recommend?" Google then pulls together sources, recommends a short list, and the user often asks follow-ups ("which one's open Sunday?", "which one has the best reviews?") before ever clicking a profile. If your business has consistent identity signals and strong reviews, you stay in the conversation longer. If not, you're dropped on the first follow-up.

A handyman company kept their Google Business Profile current, ran a steady review-request workflow, and rewrote their service pages with explicit service-area and pricing-factor sections. In AI Mode tests, they consistently appeared in the "top recommendations" reply for north Tampa handyman queries — and survived follow-up filters like "open weekends" and "good for emergency calls" because the profile attributes and review content backed those facts up.
