AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
AEO is the practice of making your business the answer an AI assistant gives when someone asks who to hire — not just a link in a list.
What it is
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the layer of work that makes your business show up inside AI-generated answers, not just in a list of blue links. Answer engines include ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and the AI Overview boxes at the top of Google Search. They read the web, summarize what they find, and hand the user a direct answer.
AEO doesn't replace traditional SEO. It builds on it. The same fundamentals — crawlable pages, accurate business information, real proof — still matter. What AEO adds is making your content easy to extract: clear headings, short fact-dense paragraphs, FAQs, and structured data that a machine can lift cleanly into an answer without guessing.
Why it matters for your business
When a customer asks ChatGPT or Google's AI "who should I hire for water heater repair near me?" they're not going to scroll through ten results. They get a short list — sometimes just one name. If your business is the one the AI feels safe naming, you get the call. If you're not, you don't even get a chance to compete. AEO is how you become the recommendation, not the runner-up.
Example
A roofer's service page used to be three paragraphs of marketing copy. They rewrote it with a clear question-style heading ("How much does roof repair cost in [city]?"), a 4-step process, a pricing-factors list, and a 6-question FAQ. Within two months, the page started getting cited by Perplexity and quoted in Google AI Overviews — the exact same content humans were reading was now being summarized into AI answers.
