Reviews

Reviews are the customer ratings and written feedback that appear on your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, and industry-specific sites — one of the strongest signals search engines and AI assistants use to decide who to recommend.

What it is

Reviews are public ratings and text feedback left by past customers on platforms like Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, the Better Business Bureau, and industry directories. Search engines and AI assistants treat them as one of the most heavily weighted local ranking signals — partly because they're hard to fake at scale and partly because they correlate strongly with real customer experience.

Four things matter, in roughly this order: recency (a steady drip of recent reviews beats a pile from three years ago), volume (more is better, with diminishing returns past a few hundred), rating (a 4.4–4.8 average is the sweet spot — a flawless 5.0 with 50 reviews actually looks suspicious), and response behavior (replying to reviews, especially the critical ones, signals an active and accountable business).

Why it matters for your business

Reviews are the closest thing to a universal currency in local SEO. They influence the Local Pack directly, they're the first thing humans look at when comparing options, and AI assistants are increasingly weighing them when making recommendations. The biggest mistake most local businesses make isn't getting bad reviews — it's not asking for reviews at all. A steady flow of fresh reviews from real customers is the single most reliable way to keep ranking and keep calls coming in.

Example

A pest-control company averaged 4.6 stars but only collected 8 reviews a year — a barely-detectable trickle. They added a one-step review request to every completed-service follow-up email and asked technicians to mention it on-site. Within six months, review velocity rose to 6 a month, the Google Business Profile climbed two spots in the Local Pack for their main service area, and call volume went up about 35 percent without any other changes.
