E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

E-E-A-T is Google's framework for whether a page can be trusted — built on real experience, demonstrated expertise, recognized authority, and verifiable trust signals.

What it is

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — the four things Google's quality raters look for when judging whether a page deserves to rank, especially in categories that affect people's money, health, or safety (which includes most home services). It started as E-A-T and the "Experience" was added later when Google explicitly recognized that first-hand knowledge — having actually done the thing — matters more than just being qualified to talk about it.

For a local service business, E-E-A-T isn't a setting you toggle. It's the cumulative effect of: real photos of real jobs, reviews that reference real people on your team, licenses and certifications shown publicly, an "About" page that names actual humans, content that demonstrates first-hand knowledge of the work, and consistency between what you claim and what other sources (directories, reviews, the BBB) say about you.

Why it matters for your business

In 2026, generic AI-written service pages flood the web. Google increasingly demotes pages that sound knowledgeable but don't show signs of real experience. Pages with concrete details — specific job sites, photos with people in them, named technicians, dated case studies, customer-named testimonials — are what survive. E-E-A-T is also a strong signal for AI assistants making recommendations: they're trying to avoid sending users to businesses that might not exist, and visible proof is how you stop being filtered out.

Example

Two roofers wrote almost the same "metal vs shingle roofing" article. One was generic, third-person, no photos. The other included two named project examples ("the Johnson place in Riverside, August 2024"), photos of actual installs, the lead estimator's bio, and the company's contractor license number with state link. The second page outranked the first across every related query within six months — Google's quality raters saw E-E-A-T signals on one and not the other.
