Service Area Business (SAB)
A Service Area Business is a business that travels to customers — plumbers, electricians, movers, landscapers — rather than serving them at a fixed storefront.
What it is
A Service Area Business (SAB) is one that serves customers at their location rather than at a public storefront. Most home-service businesses fall into this category: plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, movers, landscapers, pest-control, garage door repair, appliance repair. The defining feature is that customers don't visit a public address — the business comes to them.
Google Business Profile treats SABs differently than storefront businesses. You don't show a public street address; you instead list the cities, ZIP codes, or regions you serve. That service-area list is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide whether to show your business for a "near me" query in a given area.
Why it matters for your business
If you're a SAB and your Google Business Profile is set up as a storefront — with a public address — Google will use that single address as your distance reference point, so you'll only rank near it. Set up correctly as a SAB with the right service areas, you become eligible to appear across the whole region you actually serve. The flip side: claiming a service area that's too broad ("the entire state of Texas") dilutes the signal and rarely helps you rank anywhere. Tighter and accurate beats wider and aspirational.
Example
A plumbing company based in the suburbs of Tampa had Google Business Profile set up with their office address public. They ranked well in their own suburb but invisible across the rest of the metro. Switching to SAB mode, hiding the office address, and listing 12 specific neighborhoods they actually served got them into the Local Pack for those neighborhoods within three months — calls roughly tripled because the same queries now showed their business to people who lived 15 miles away.
